Derby Day Mint Juleps
Derby Day Mint Juleps
The Kentucky Derby always falls on my birthday weekend, so this year, I decided to celebrate with the southern signature cocktail. I got the recipe from my friend Xavier Herit, a Parisian mixologist extraordinaire and longtime head bartender at Daniel. His current project is on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Experimental Cocktail Club, another Parisian export, but if you want to shake up some stellar drinks at home, pick up a copy of his recent 2-part book with Chef Daniel Boulud, Cocktails and Amuse-Bouches (For Her & For Him); though you won’t find this recipe listed, so take note and you’re off to the races!

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Serves 1
Mint Julep
10 Mint leaves + 1 Mint head to garnish

•In a cocktail shaker, muddle the mint leaves with the simple syrup. Add shaved ice, bourbon and bitters; shake well.
•Serve in a silver “julep cup” or an old-fashioned glass with a short straw and a mint head.
